TWELVE

“I have to leave. I’m sorry,” said John. “I don’t have to go far. I can be back by tomorrow morning.”

He saw Grace try to hide her disappointment from him. “Ooh! Can I tag along? Maybe something of interest to the general public?”

He cocked his head at her. “Maybe of interest but not for your public to see. Honestly, I don’t know what’s up. They just told me to get to the airport asap.”

That was only a half-truth. John did know that there had been a breakthrough with Nick and Nora Charles. He just didn’t yet know the details.

It was one of the uncomfortable balances of their relationship. Because of who and what Grace was, there were a number of things Harriman knew that he couldn’t share with her. She had grudgingly accepted this, and as a general rule, they didn’t talk about work. In a gesture of thanks, from time to time he did his best to slip her a lead that wouldn’t jeopardize the security of his mission.

This wasn’t one of those times. Anything to do with Nick and Nora was definitely not for public consumption.

He took her in his arms, and they kissed with passion and forlorn. Parting was always painful, and this time they had barely spent a full day together. Grace spoke first.

“John, you don’t have to try and kill yourself to get back here. It’ll be Sunday, and I’m scheduled to fly out at six anyway. We can make up for it another time,” she said, smiling wistfully.

“If I can, I’ll get back. I promise. I would move the earth itself for a few extra hours with you,” he said.

“John Harriman! You are quite the romantic!” teased Grace. “Either way, it’s ok. It’s been a while since I’ve seen my folks and I don’t mind spending some time with them. I’m sure they have lots to talk about… like when they’re going to get some grandchildren from me.”

John lustily looked her up and down.

“Tell them you’re hard at work on it.”

Grace laughed. “You don’t know my folks well enough yet. That wouldn’t phase them a bit. They’d probably supply the fertility drugs and keep track of my ovulation cycle. You aren’t safe here!”

“But we aren’t married. It would be scandalous for them,” he joked.

“Married, smarried. They don’t care about the conventions of the day. You’re just donating a superior gene pool to their cause. If you close the door, I can probably get that donation from you in under fifteen minutes,” she winked.

They kissed again, and he thought that he could be persuaded to stick around for another hour.

“Where are your parents?” he asked sheepishly.

“Probably downstairs waiting for us to make some noise,” she said, showing him her annoyance at his hesitation. “Honestly, John, I’m thirty-seven years old, not seventeen. God knows they sure embarrassed the hell out of me enough when I was a kid! Close the damn door.”

“Where are you going next?” asked John, eyes closed but seeming sincerely interested.

She snuggled closer to him and draped her hand over his chest, eyes closed, taking his scent into her nostrils.
